États-Unis : Un ex-cadre de la CIA arrêté avec un trésor de 22,5 milliards de FCFA en lingots d'or
A former senior CIA agent, David Rush, finds himself at the center of a scandal worthy of a spy film. Accused of embezzling public funds, he was arrested after the discovery at his home of a veritable fortune in gold bars, estimated at over $40 million (approximately 22.6 billion FCFA ).
Presented by American media, including the New York Times , as a former executive of the foreign intelligence agency, the man possessed the highest security clearances of the American state.
Beyond gold trafficking, he is accused of several other offenses:
During the search, FBI agents didn't just find gold. They also uncovered an impressive "war chest" hidden at the suspect's home:
The modus operandi: According to an FBI document seen by AFP, David Rush allegedly used his position between November and March of this year to request large sums of foreign currency and millions of dollars in gold bullion, claiming they were for "business expenses." Naturally, the authorities found no valid justification for these expenditures.
When contacted by the press, the defendant's lawyer declined to comment. While awaiting trial, this case has cast a pall over Washington. As the Washington Post points out, this case raises serious questions about the effectiveness of background checks and character investigations conducted by the U.S. government on its own intelligence agents.
