Marché avicole : l’association des éleveurs alerte sur les dérives des prix des poussins

The National Association of Broiler Chicken Farmers has denounced the monopoly situation and "anarchy" prevailing in a sector that is particularly lacking in structure. The Interprofessional Federation of the Poultry Sector (FISA) is cited as protecting the interests of certain lobbies and criticizes the unreasonable prices.

In a press release, the breeders' association denounced a situation deemed "critical" and "marked by anarchy, monopoly and the total absence of control mechanisms."

"We express our deep indignation at this monopolistic situation, which has created structural imbalances that threaten the stability of the national market," the professional association emphasizes.

For breeders, one of the problems in this sector is the role played by the Interprofessional Federation of the Poultry Sector (FISA), which allegedly "protects" the large companies operating in the sector.

FISA "now appears to be exclusively defending the interests of these lobbies, without accountability, to the detriment of small and medium-sized breeders as well as Moroccan consumers," the association said in a press release.

Denouncing the prices charged, the association indicates that it is obliged to point out that under normal conditions "the cost of the chick is

It should not exceed 0.17% of the cost of producing a kilogram of live chicken - as is the case in countries concerned about the purchasing power of their citizens, particularly in Europe."

However, this ratio remains "out of reach," the association continues, denouncing the systematic monopolistic situation and what it calls "opaque manipulation carried out by the federation, its affiliated companies, as well as intermediaries and brokers. The latter manipulate the supply and its quality, in the absence of application of the traceability law n°28-07," the professionals emphasize.

He added that the Ministry of Agriculture and the Moroccan government have repeatedly ignored warnings from professionals and breeders in the sector, "since the failure of the first program contract within the framework of the Green Morocco Plan of 2011, with regard to the poultry sector."

The association adds that it had already proposed in 2019 a revision of customs duties on broiler chicks in order to encourage competition and reduce production costs, but FISA reportedly opposed this proposal.

"Since then, the market has been experiencing blatant price manipulation: the price of a chick varies between 7.00 and 12.00 dirhams in a single week, reaching more than 14.00 dirhams in 2024, without any control or intervention by the competent authorities, while its real production cost does not exceed 3.00 dirhams," the organization denounces.

For the National Association of Broiler Chicken Farmers, it is no longer just a matter of defending professional interests, but of protecting the entire value chain, right up to the end consumer, especially since prices seem to irritate consumers who ultimately pay the high price for this lack of market structure.
