Mondial 2026 : L'Angleterre dompte le Mexique au bout du suspense et file en quarts !
In a dramatic round of 16 match, the Three Lions defeated Mexico 3-2 in the cauldron of the Azteca Stadium. Reduced to ten men for nearly forty minutes, Thomas Tuchel's side withstood the home side's onslaught to secure their place in the quarterfinals.
Facing Mexico in their legendary Azteca stadium, at 2,240 meters altitude and in front of 80,000 ecstatic fans, is always a monumental challenge. For this co-host country, history spoke for itself: El Tricolor had never lost a single World Cup match in this beloved stadium.
The trap was perfect, especially since kickoff was delayed by an hour due to severe weather. Facing a Mexican side riding a four-game winning streak without conceding a goal, England – who had been timid during the group stage – expected to struggle. Indeed, as early as the 15th minute, Jordan Pickford had to make a crucial save from a diving header by Raul Jiménez to prevent further damage.
Against the run of play, the spark ignited from the Madrid genius. In the space of 90 seconds, Jude Bellingham silenced the Azteca stadium:
Stunned but spurred on by their fans, the Mexicans responded before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Quiñones pounced on a loose ball in the box, volleying past Pickford (2-1) . Mexico almost equalized immediately, but Bellingham, once again, saved his team by dispossessing Montes at the last moment.
After the break, the match descended into chaos. Following a VAR review, England's Jarell Quansah was sent off for a reckless tackle on Gallardo. Down to 10 men, England were reeling, but thought they had secured the win when the Mexican goalkeeper brought down Anthony Gordon in the box. Harry Kane calmly converted the penalty (3-1) .
The joy was short-lived. A few minutes later, a dramatic turn of events: a harsh foul was called against England... committed by Kane himself. Raul Jiménez converted the penalty in the 70th minute (3-2) , sending the stadium into raptures.
The final 20 minutes of regulation time, extended by 11 minutes of added time, resembled the Alamo. Switching to a five-man defense, exhausted by the altitude and the pressure, the English bent but never broke against the repeated Mexican attacks.
By securing a dramatic victory, England became only the third team in history to defeat Mexico at their Azteca Stadium. This monumental achievement propels the Three Lions into the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway on July 11th.
