Nuuk dans le noir : une tempête prive la capitale groenlandaise d'électricité
Greenland's capital experienced a frigid and dark Sunday night. Around 10:30 p.m. on the night of January 24-25, 2026, a total blackout struck Nuuk and its 20,000 residents. The cause: extremely strong winds that knocked out the transmission line connecting the city to its main power source.
An infrastructure put to the test. The capital's electricity comes primarily from a hydroelectric plant located 50 kilometers away. The storm severed this vital link, forcing the national supplier, Nukissiorfiit, to respond urgently. Despite the immediate deployment of backup generators, the restoration proved difficult: three hours after the incident, many neighborhoods were still plunged into darkness.
This incident once again highlights the fragility of energy networks in the Arctic region, where the winter climate does not forgive any technical failure.
