Quatre décès liés à la neige et au froid en une semaine : conseils d'Urgences-Santé pour la prévention

Four people, including three seniors, tragically lost their lives in winter-related incidents in Quebec this week. In response to these tragedies, Urgences-Santé (Quebec's public health unit) has issued essential safety recommendations for everyone, particularly during snow removal activities and outings in cold weather.

Precautions to take when clearing snow

The case of a 58-year-old man found buried under snow in Repentigny – who had heart problems – highlights the risks associated with intense physical exertion in cold weather.

"You have to listen to your body, you have to respect yourself," insisted Jean-Pierre Rouleau, spokesperson for Urgences-Santé.
  1. Listen to your body: If you feel dizzy or any other discomfort, stop snow removal immediately and take a break.
  2. Take breaks: It is crucial to stop regularly to catch your breath and avoid overheating or excessive fatigue.
  3. Keep your phone handy: If you're shoveling snow alone, keep your cell phone close at hand. This allows you to quickly contact emergency services in case of illness or an emergency.

Prevention of cold-related risks in the elderly

The week was also marked by the deaths of three seniors (aged 78, 84, and 88) in the greater Montreal area due to the extreme cold. To prevent such tragedies, Urgences-Santé (the Montreal ambulance service) emphasizes the importance of caution and preparation.

  1. Avoid going out alone: Whenever possible, avoid going out alone, especially in isolated areas where help might be difficult to obtain quickly in the event of a fall.
  2. Appropriate clothing: Wear warm clothing suitable for the weather conditions.
  3. Non-slip shoes: Equip yourself with shoes that offer good grip to prevent falls.
  4. Stay indoors during storms: If you have no absolute obligation to go out, avoid doing so during snowstorms.

Jean-Pierre Rouleau reminds us that, although circumstances vary from case to case, prevention remains the best tool for getting through winter safely.
