Tragédie en Colombie-Britannique : Neuf morts dans une fusillade à Tumbler Ridge
Canada is reeling after a deadly attack Tuesday in Tumbler Ridge , a small, isolated community of 2,300 people nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The toll is heavy: nine people lost their lives , including the suspected gunman, and 27 others were injured in a double attack targeting a school and a private residence.
The alert was raised in the early afternoon, reporting the presence of an active shooter inside the city's high school.
For more than two hours, the city was under total lockdown. Inside the high school, students experienced horror. Darian Quist, a student in a mechanics class, testified that he received "terrible" photos of the carnage before the police evacuated the building under heavy guard.
Of the 27 injured identified by the RCMP, two are in serious condition, while the other 25 have minor injuries.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his deep sorrow at this "terrible shooting." As a sign of mourning and to monitor the evolving situation, he announced the cancellation of his trip to the Munich Security Conference.
"I join Canadians in expressing my sympathy to those whose lives have been forever changed today," the Prime Minister said on the X network.
Although school shootings remain rare in Canada, the province of British Columbia has been particularly hard hit. This tragedy comes less than a year after the Vancouver truck attack in April 2025, which killed 11 people at a cultural festival.
The province's Minister of Public Safety confirmed at the end of the day that all danger had now been eliminated, specifying that no other suspects were being sought.
