Tout savoir sur l'Assemblée Nationale de Côte d'Ivoire : Cœur de la Démocratie Ivoirienne

The National Assembly, along with the Senate, is one of the two pillars of the Ivorian Parliament. A true center of legislative power, it has played a crucial role in the country's political life since independence.

A Historical Monument in the Heart of Abidjan

Located in Plateau , Abidjan's business and administrative district, the institution's headquarters is the work of French architect Jean Semichon . A symbol of the continuity of the State, this building has housed the members of parliament since 1960 .

Although its exact surface area is not made public, the building is organized over several levels and has modern infrastructure:

  1. The plenary hall (the hemicycle), where the major debates are held.
  2. Committee rooms for technical legislative work.
  3. Administrative offices and protocol areas.

The Evolution of Representation (1960 - 2025)

The number of members of parliament, elected by direct universal suffrage for a 5-year term , has changed considerably to keep pace with the country's population growth:

Legislature Period Number of Members of Parliament
1st to 3rd 1960 – 1975 100 members of parliament
4th 1975 – 1980 120 members of parliament
5th to 8th 1980 – 2000 175 members of parliament
9th 2000 – 2011 225 members of parliament
10th to 12th 2012 – 2025 255 members of parliament

The Great Figures of the Hemicycle

Since 1960, eight presidents have succeeded one another in the speaker's chair, each leaving their mark on parliamentary history in their own way:

  1. Philippe Yacé (1960-1980): The record for longevity (20 years).
  2. Henri Konan Bédié (1980-1993): The only president of the Assembly to have become Head of State.
  3. Charles Bauza Donwahi (1994-1997): Deceased during his term of office.
  4. Émile Amoikon Atta Brou (1997-1999).
  5. Mamadou Koulibaly (2001-2012).
  6. Guillaume Soro (2012-2019).
  7. Amadou Soumahoro (2019-2022): Also died in office.
  8. Adama Bictogo (Since 2022): Current president of the institution.
