1. Current situation

On May 3, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a health alert regarding a hantavirus infection outbreak detected on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius (traveling between Ushuaia in Argentina and Cape Verde).

As of May 12, 2026, the official report states 11 confirmed cases, including 3 deaths (representing a case fatality rate of 27.3%).

Situation in Ivory Coast: To date, no cases have been detected or confirmed on national territory.

However, faced with the risk of the virus being introduced, the Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage is calling for increased vigilance.

2. What is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a virus primarily transmitted to humans by rodents (especially rats) .

  1. Modes of transmission: Inhalation of dust contaminated by rodent urine or excrement, direct contact with these animals/excrement, or, more rarely, transmission between humans during close and prolonged contact.
  2. Incubation period: Symptoms usually appear about two weeks after infection.

Symptoms to watch for:

  1. High fever and intense fatigue
  2. Muscle pain and headaches
  3. Breathing difficulties

3. Recommended preventive measures

To stop the spread of the virus, the Ministry urges the public to strictly adopt the following preventative and hygiene measures:

Domestic hygiene and rodent control

  1. Cleanliness: Keep your homes clean. Use closed bins and dispose of household waste regularly.
  2. Food protection: Do not leave food scraps lying around and store your food in airtight containers.
  3. Sealing: Seal holes in walls and secure the bottom of doors to prevent rodent intrusion.
  4. Safe cleaning: Never sweep dry (first dampen surfaces to avoid stirring up contaminated dust). Wear gloves and a mask if possible, then wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

What to do in case of symptoms

If you show signs of the disease (especially after contact with rodents or their traces):

  1. Go to the nearest health center immediately.
  2. Inform medical staff of your potential exposure to rodents.
  3. Strictly avoid any self-medication .
  4. Wear a face mask to protect those around you.

4. Commitment of the authorities

The Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene, and Universal Health Coverage wishes to reassure the entire population: the epidemiological surveillance and response system has been strengthened at all borders and throughout the country. All necessary measures are being taken to guarantee the country's health security.
