On the occasion of the commemoration of the 51st anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the resident representation in Côte d'Ivoire took stock of the actions carried out by the organization since its creation, while emphasizing future projects.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 in Abidjan, in the presence of Ambassador Sandra Folquet (representing the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Ivorians Abroad) as well as several administrative, customary and religious authorities.

Half a century of integration and progress

In her address, Fathmah Diarré Mahan, the ECOWAS Acting Resident Representative in Côte d'Ivoire, paid tribute to the vision of the founding fathers who, on May 28, 1975, in Lagos, laid the foundations for a united space. According to her, ECOWAS has established itself as one of the most dynamic regional organizations on the continent.

Ms. Diarré Mahan highlighted several major advances:

  1. Mobility and the economy: The free movement of people and trade cooperation initiatives.
  2. Development: Large-scale infrastructure programs.
  3. Peace and social issues: Actions to prevent and manage conflicts, humanitarian interventions, as well as projects dedicated to women and young people.

She also praised Côte d'Ivoire's historic role and constant commitment to stability and regional integration.

Persistent challenges and the focus on Vision 2050

Despite these successes, the resident representative noted that the sub-region faces significant structural and contemporary challenges:

  1. Security and governance.
  2. Youth employment and social inclusion.
  3. Climate change and economic transformation.
  4. Women's empowerment.

To address this, ECOWAS is relying on its Vision 2050 , a roadmap that aims to place people directly at the heart of the community project. " The success of our projects will depend on our collective ability to preserve achievements, strengthen cooperation, and build stronger institutions ," stressed Ms. Diarré Mahan, calling for a strengthened union.

Honor and Recognition Alongside the retrospective presentations on the institution's achievements, the event was marked by a moment of recognition. An honorary distinction was awarded to Mr. Sondo Amidou, an ECOWAS staff member who retired after 21 years of service.
