Former MP for Tiassalé, Assalé Tiémoko, was formally charged this Friday, May 15, 2026, in Abidjan. While he has not yet been placed in pretrial detention, the president of the ADCI political movement is now subject to strict judicial supervision pending his trial.

An indictment without a warrant for detention

Following his hearing by the investigating judge of the 8th chamber, on the decision of the senior judge, Assalé Tiémoko was charged with several serious offenses: "spreading false news, disturbing public order and issuing outrageous proposals" .

Since the magistrate did not issue an arrest warrant, the leader of the Aujourd'hui Demain la Côte d'Ivoire (ADCI) movement was able to return home freely. The date of his trial should be set in the coming days.

An interview under scrutiny by the justice system

According to the ADCI, the legal troubles of its president stem exclusively from an interview given on March 23, 2026 to an Ivorian media outlet based in France.

This procedure has accelerated in several stages:

1. April 22, 2026: A marathon of sixteen-hour interrogations took place at the Abidjan police headquarters. After falling ill following this questioning, Assalé Tiémoko had to be hospitalized at the Cardiology Institute, leading to his release from custody. He was then notified of four offenses (disturbing public order, spreading false news, inciting rebellion, and discrediting institutions), although no restrictions on his freedom were initially imposed.
2. May 11, 2026: As he was preparing to fly to Canada for political activities, the opposition figure was prevented from boarding, without official notification.
3. May 12, 2026: After officially contacting the prosecutor to clarify his situation, he received a summons to appear before the investigating judge this Friday, May 15.

A critical figure of the powers that be

A former parliamentarian and rising voice of the Ivorian opposition, Assalé Tiémoko is known for his virulent stances against the dysfunctions of society and the governance of President Alassane Ouattara.

His recent denunciations of an "electoral heist" during the last legislative elections, coupled with a media-covered meeting with former president Laurent Gbagbo, have considerably revived political tensions between his camp and the government in Abidjan.
