Koumassi : Un nouveau-né et sa mère séquestrés, sauvés in extremis par la BRI Sud
A night of anguish shook the Koumassi district on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. A surgical intervention by the Research and Intervention Brigade (BRI Sud) made it possible to free, safe and sound, an infant and his mother, held hostage in their home.
It was around 10:30 p.m. when a witness raised the alarm: a man had barricaded himself inside his home, holding a woman and her baby hostage while making serious threats. Police officers arrived quickly on the scene and realized the gravity of the situation. The man, clearly under the influence of alcohol, refused to speak and directly threatened the newborn's life if the police intervened.
For over an hour, the BRI South negotiators tried to reason with the gunman to obtain a peaceful surrender. Faced with his stubborn refusal and the imminent danger to the hostages, the BRI South Commander gave the order to intervene.
Taking advantage of a moment of distraction, the police launched a swift tactical assault. The operation was a success.
The suspect, identified by the initials DY, was immediately arrested and taken to the BRI headquarters. In his initial statements, he attempted to justify his actions by claiming he feared his partner would permanently leave the family home with their child.
Thanks to the composure and technical expertise of the police, this family tragedy was averted. A judicial inquiry has been opened to determine the criminal consequences of this case.
