In Côte d'Ivoire, blood donation is a strictly voluntary and free act. However, during a transfusion, patients are asked to contribute 3,000 FCFA . To avoid any misunderstanding, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has clarified what this sum actually covers.

A high-cost security process

Blood cannot be transfused directly after collection. Before reaching the patient's bedside, each unit undergoes a rigorous and essential technical process to guarantee the recipient's safety:

1. Biological screening: In-depth analyses are carried out to detect possible infectious diseases.
2. Product preparation: Blood is separated into different components (red blood cells, plasma, platelets) according to medical needs.
3. Storage and distribution: The bags are stored under strict thermal conditions and transported day and night to health centers.

The key figure: All these security and technical processing steps actually cost at least 50,000 FCFA per bag. This amount is almost entirely subsidized by the Ivorian government. The 3,000 FCFA charged to the patient therefore represents only a symbolic contribution to operating costs.

A contribution that also supports donors

Beyond the technical aspects, this financial contribution helps to sustain the chain of solidarity by encouraging regular donors through several mechanisms:

1. Post-donation support: This covers a full snack (meal, mineral water, sweets) as well as a transport allowance of 2,000 FCFA offered to donors to facilitate their travel.
2. Free for loyal donors: People with a regular donor card do not pay for blood bags when they need them.
3. Extended protection to the family: This free benefit also applies to the immediate relatives of the active donor (his or her parents, spouse, and children under 18).

In short, the 3,000 FCFA requested does not constitute the "price" of blood, but a citizen contribution that helps maintain a safe, efficient and protective transfusion system for committed donors.
