Côte d’Ivoire : lancement de la phase répressive contre les plaques d’immatriculation illégales
The fight against illegal license plates has entered a new phase in Ivory Coast. Since Monday, February 16, 2026, the authorities have launched a vast control operation across the entire country, with a zero-tolerance policy.
Led by the Directorate General of Land Transport and Traffic (DGTTC), with the support of the National Police and Gendarmerie, this action targets vehicles circulating with fanciful, falsified, non-compliant or deliberately concealed license plates.
From the very first hours of the operation, several vehicles were impounded and taken to the pound, including government vehicles. The owners in violation will only be able to retrieve their vehicles after rectifying their situation and paying the applicable fines.
Through this enforcement phase, the government intends to strengthen road safety and facilitate the identification of vehicles involved in offenses or criminal acts. This measure also aims to put an end to the feeling of impunity often associated with the use of irregular license plates.
The authorities specify that all categories of vehicles are affected. However, the defense and security forces are granted a grace period to comply with the new regulations before the strict application of sanctions.
This national operation is part of the overall strategy to modernize the transport system and strengthen road governance in Ivory Coast.
