Ghana : Accra saisit l’ambassade de Russie après le scandale des vidéos intimes filmées à l’insu de jeunes femmes
Ghana is currently experiencing a major uproar following the release on social media of intimate videos showing young Ghanaian women filmed without their consent by a foreign national identified as Russian. The affair, which went viral within hours, has taken a diplomatic turn with the official involvement of the Russian embassy in Accra.
According to initial reports from Ghanaian authorities, the individual used a hidden device to record private sexual encounters without the consent of the women involved. Excerpts were then posted online, while full versions were offered on private, pay-per-view platforms.
Faced with national outrage, the Ghanaian government reacted swiftly. The Minister of Communications and Digital Technology summoned the Russian diplomatic representative to secure cooperation in identifying and prosecuting the suspect, who is believed to have left the country. Accra is also considering requesting Interpol's support and initiating extradition proceedings.
Authorities reiterate that Ghanaian legislation on cybersecurity and privacy protection is particularly strict. The recording and dissemination of intimate content without consent are offenses punishable by severe prison sentences, potentially lasting several decades.
Beyond the legal aspects, the case has sparked a societal debate on the protection of women, consent, and the abuses associated with the digital exploitation of images. On social media, numerous voices are denouncing a serious attack on the dignity of the victims and calling for exemplary sanctions.
The international dimension of the case remains delicate, however. Russia rarely extradites its citizens, which could complicate any legal proceedings initiated by Accra if the suspect is currently outside the country.
Furthermore, unconfirmed reports suggest similar incidents in other African countries, which could broaden the investigation to a regional scale.
Meanwhile, Ghanaian public opinion continues to put pressure on the authorities to ensure that justice is served and that victims receive redress in a case that once again highlights the challenges posed by digital crime and the protection of privacy in the age of social media.
