Affaire Habib Bèye : Daniel Riolo prend position et promet de régler ses comptes avec deux quotidiens français
After Marseille's victory against Le Havre, Habib Bèye launched a scathing attack on the French press. The Senegalese coach denounced a smear campaign against him. "I have rarely seen such relentless attacks against someone," lamented the Olympique de Marseille manager.
While he continues to receive criticism, notably from Christophe Dugarry, Habib Bèye can count on the support of Daniel Riolo. On RMC Sport's After Foot program, the journalist backed the Marseille coach: "He's absolutely right. What happened at the end of the season was absolutely disgusting in Marseille. Some journalists would do well to take a good look at themselves in the mirror this morning because they've been spouting a lot of nonsense. I don't know what their motives were."
According to the journalist, there is a new habit among some colleagues of following social media trends to avoid criticism: "I think that today, social media dictates behavior and that there has been a trend, a fad, to tear Habib Bèye down for the past two months. [...] There have been lies, fabricated stories, and people wanted to harm him. [...] Our profession is dying because of this."
“Guys make their lives on social media, but that it dictates behavior to some journalists who are then afraid… Very honestly, today, social media is so powerful, you have to be tough. [...] We took a turn on social media and Bèye took it head-on,” Riolo says again.
The journalist mentions a tendency to follow the crowd that leads some to criticize Habib Bèye because the Senegalese coach regularly faces a barrage of online criticism. The reason? Not primarily his sporting results, but his stances when he was a pundit.
At the end of the season, the journalist promises to denounce two French sports dailies that participated in this "bashing" against Habib Bèye, without naming them: "There are two dailies, at the end of the season, I think I'm going to settle a couple of scores. We'll wait and see. They shouldn't be reporting this, they shouldn't be getting involved in this movement." "I don't give a damn if people repeat 'Riolo is an idiot' 150 times on social media, I don't give a damn about any of them," the RMC journalist fumes.
