A bombshell has dropped behind the scenes of African football. The Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Véron Mosengo-Omba, announced his departure from the organization on Sunday, March 29, on the sidelines of the Executive Committee meeting held in Cairo. Officially, he cited personal reasons and stated that he was leaving his post with a clear conscience, having dispelled the suspicions surrounding him.

But behind this departure, presented as voluntary, the context is far more tense. For several months, internal criticisms had pointed to a management style deemed authoritarian, suspicions of favoritism, and a toxic work environment within the Confederation of African Football. These accusations had led to the opening of internal investigations into governance, gradually weakening his position at the top of the administration.

On the legal front, Véron Mosengo-Omba was also the subject of an investigation in Switzerland on suspicion of mismanagement and fraud. The case was ultimately dismissed due to lack of evidence, a point he cites to defend his record, but which has not been enough to ease internal tensions.

At the same time, his legitimacy to hold the position was increasingly challenged by some leaders, who felt he no longer met all the requirements to remain at that level of responsibility. This challenge, coupled with repeated controversies surrounding the governance of the Confederation of African Football, contributed to creating a climate of lasting crisis.
