The decision by Ibrahima Mbaye and Mamadou Sarr to represent Senegal has sparked discussion. France's national team coach, Didier Deschamps, reacted to these choices following the release of his squad list for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
When questioned about the case of dual-nationality players who opt to play for other national teams, the French coach adopted a measured tone. "It's a sensitive subject, but it's a freedom these players have always had, whether they are dual or triple nationals. It's their choice, for various reasons," he replied.
For Deschamps, choosing a player between two nations is primarily a matter of individual freedom, not a question of attractiveness or competition between national teams. "I don't get to dictate attractiveness," he clarifies. "Obviously, there are many other national teams that have very specific plans for the players they can attract. These players have that freedom, and I have nothing to say about it."
The French national team coach also wanted to clarify that he has never tried to keep a player for strategic reasons. "I have never picked someone to block them, to prevent them from going elsewhere. And I won't do it," he added.
