Congo :Un dirigeant du football condamné à la prison à perpétuité
The Congolese justice system has dealt a severe blow in a case of embezzlement linked to football. The former president of the Congolese Football Federation, Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Brazzaville criminal court.
He was found guilty of money laundering, forgery and use of forged documents, and embezzlement of approximately $1.3 million in FIFA funding for football development in the country.
According to the evidence examined by the court, part of these funds included $500,000 earmarked for the development of women's football , as part of the aid granted during the COVID-19 pandemic. These resources were intended for organizing competitions and improving sports infrastructure, but they were never used for the announced projects.
In the same case, the wife and son of the former leader were also sentenced to life imprisonment for their alleged involvement. Furthermore, the federation's secretary general and treasurer received five-year prison sentences .
This verdict comes amid repeated tensions and crises within Congolese football , where the issue of governance and resource management has regularly sparked controversy in recent years.
