Coupe du monde 2026 : l’Iran annonce qu’il ne participera pas au tournoi
Iran may ultimately be absent from the next FIFA World Cup 2026. Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali has stated that the national team will not participate in the tournament scheduled for June and July 2026.
This decision comes amid heightened tensions following attacks carried out by the United States, with Israeli support, against Iran. According to several reports in international media, these strikes reportedly killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
According to the Minister of Sports, the current political and security situation prevents the national team from participating in the competition. This stance could deprive the tournament of a team that has already qualified.
The 2026 World Cup is to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran's potential absence could lead FIFA to consider replacing them with another team.
For now, the world football governing body has not yet officially confirmed the situation, leaving uncertainty over Iran's final participation in this historic World Cup which will bring together 48 teams for the first time.
