Polémique Nigeria-RDC : Chelle présente ses excuses après sa crise de nerfs

Nigeria 's recent elimination by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs was marked by an incident that sparked outrage across African football. Eric Chelle , coach of the Super Eagles, strongly criticized a member of the Congolese staff, alleging the use of "voodoo" practices, following the penalty shootout that sealed the DRC's victory.

Faced with the outcry sparked by his remarks, Chelle issued a formal apology via his social media. He explained that his words came " in the heat of the moment ," following a technical altercation with a member of the DRC staff. In an Instagram story, the French coach clarified:

“I never intended to target the Congolese people or their staff. My comments were an emotional reaction linked to the disappointment of my team's elimination. I deeply respect the Congolese staff and public.”

This outburst was widely reported in the international and African press, with some media outlets suggesting a nervous breakdown and accusations of witchcraft. Chelle added that he regretted using the term "voodoo," aware of its cultural significance and the unease it could provoke.

Despite the elimination, Chelle praised the DRC's performance, highlighting the quality of his team and the passion of his fans. This controversy serves as a reminder of the intense pressure coaches face during crucial matches and the importance of controlling their emotions , even in the face of frustration.

Chelle's reaction sparked a wide-ranging debate on social media, with some feeling that her apology was sufficient, while others pointed out that the initial accusations remained problematic in a culturally sensitive context.
