WTA 250 d’Osaka : Naomi Osaka abandonne sur blessure…
It's a tough blow for the Japanese public. Naomi Osaka, the number one seed at the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka, has been forced to withdraw from her quarter-final match scheduled for Friday.
The 28-year-old is suffering from a left thigh injury, sustained during her second-round match against defending champion Suzan Lamens.
"Naomi Osaka has not recovered from her left leg injury sustained in the second round and has withdrawn from the quarterfinals," the organizers announced on X.
In tears after her grueling victory against the Dutchwoman, the former world number one finished the match with a visible bandage and admitted to having resorted to painkillers to last until the end.
This injury puts a stop to Osaka's fine form, which she has returned to a good level this season after maternity leave. Ranked 16th in the world, she was due to face Romania's Jaqueline Cristian (47th) for a place in the semifinals.
Her withdrawal leaves Canadian Leylah Fernandez, ranked 27th in the world, as the highest-ranked player still in contention. It remains to be seen whether the Japanese player will be able to compete in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, scheduled for next week, where she is already registered but is uncertain.
