The Cybercrime Prevention Platform (PLCC) announced on Friday, June 19, 2026, the arrest of an individual specializing in bank fraud. He had managed to defraud his victim by discreetly photographing their credit card.

The modus operandi: a few seconds of inattention

It all began when the victim, KMH, noticed several suspicious and unauthorized withdrawals from her account. After an unsuccessful internal investigation by her bank, she decided to file a complaint with the PLCC.

The cyber-investigators' investigations quickly led to the identification and arrest of the suspect, a man named SGY. Confronted with the evidence, he confessed and revealed his method:

  1. Data theft: Taking advantage of a moment of distraction from the victim, he photographed the front and back of her bank card.
  2. International complicity: With the help of his brother residing in Europe, he opened an account on an online payment platform.
  3. The damage: Using the stolen contact details, the two accomplices embezzled a total of 400,000 FCFA .

Justice and sanctions

The scheme having been uncovered, SGY was brought before the public prosecutor. He is being prosecuted for bank fraud, in accordance with Law No. 2013-451 of June 19, 2013, relating to the fight against cybercrime in Côte d'Ivoire.

The PLCC's security advice: Your bank card contains highly sensitive data (number, expiry date, CVV code). Never leave it unattended and never give it to anyone. A third party can photograph it in seconds and compromise your finances.
