The province of Sanmatenga (Lilbouré sector) was the scene of a dark afternoon on Friday, January 16, 2026. Two successive accidents on the Dori-Kaya road resulted in a heavy toll: 12 dead and 73 injured .

Circumstances of the accidents

According to initial findings, reckless overtaking appears to be the primary cause of these tragedies:

1. First incident: A 10-ton truck, loaded with jujubes and carrying many passengers from Dori, overturned after a collision with a tanker truck during an overtaking maneuver.
2. Second incident: Shortly afterwards, at the same location, a light vehicle (Nissan brand) travelling towards Kaya was sandwiched and struck successively by two trucks, again following risky overtaking attempts.

Human and material toll

Emergency services and police report a total of 85 victims :

1. 12 people died ;
2. 22 seriously injured ;
3. 51 minor injuries .

The material damage is considerable, with both vehicles involved having been almost completely crushed by the force of the impacts.

Emergency response organization

A significant chain of solidarity and intervention has been deployed on the scene:

1. Evacuation: The injured were urgently transported to the Kaya Regional Hospital .
2. Security: The National Gendarmerie (ESRI) and the Water and Forestry agents have secured the area.
3. Procedure: The Prosecutor of Faso at the High Court of Kaya went to the site to supervise the usual findings made by the Pissila Police Station.

Call for vigilance: Faced with this carnage, road authorities are once again calling on drivers to exercise the utmost caution and reminding them that failure to comply with overtaking rules remains one of the leading causes of death on the RN3.
