Nigeria : Lourdes pertes jihadistes après des attaques contre l'armée
The Nigerian army announced it had neutralized more than 20 jihadist fighters in Yobe State (northeast). This operation follows a series of coordinated offensives by the insurgents against military positions earlier this week.
According to military spokesman Sani Uba, troops repelled attacks by the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) targeting the Goniri base between Monday evening and Tuesday morning.
The country is facing a resurgence of violence from Boko Haram and ISWAP. Last Monday alone, at least 14 people , including 10 soldiers, were killed in Borno and Yobe states.
The previous week, a similar attack near the Cameroonian border had claimed the lives of 18 people (7 soldiers and 11 civilians).
The jihadist insurgency, which has been ongoing since 2009, has plunged the region into a deep humanitarian crisis:
Faced with this instability, international support is intensifying. Since last February, American troops have been deployed on Nigerian soil to provide technical assistance and strengthen the training of local forces.
