Ouganda : Arrestation de la militante Sarah Bireete sous tension pré-électorale
Just two weeks before the presidential and parliamentary elections, the Ugandan security apparatus is taking a tougher stance. Sarah Bireete , a renowned lawyer and leading figure in human rights advocacy, was arrested at her home in Kampala on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
The arrest took place in a climate of siege. Moments before being taken away, the director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CGC) had alerted the public on social media: "My house is besieged by the police and the army."
While the police spokesperson confirmed her detention in the evening, the reasons for it remain unclear. Authorities have only stated that investigations are underway and that she will be brought before a judge "in due course."
Although respected for her moderation, Sarah Bireete remains a virulent observer of the authoritarian excesses of power.
For many observers, this event is part of a broader strategy of intimidation. Nicholas Opiyo , a prominent figure in exiled civil society, describes the arrest as "tragic but predictable."
“In Uganda, elections are obtained through violence. Sarah’s case is in the media, but it reflects the fate of many young activists and opponents, like Kizza Besigye, who is currently being prosecuted for treason,” he points out.
As President Yoweri Museveni seeks another term after four decades in power, the arrest of Sarah Bireete has crystallized concerns among the international community and local NGOs. These groups are demanding immediate transparency regarding the charges against her, fearing that the justice system could be used as a tool for political neutralization before the January election.
