Sénégal: 20 morts depuis fin septembre dans une épidémie de la fièvre de la Vallée du Rift (ministère)

Twenty people have died in Senegal following an outbreak of Rift Valley fever, a viral disease affecting animals and humans that has been detected in the West African country for three weeks, the Ministry of Health has told AFP.

"Since the start of the epidemic (on September 20), Senegal has recorded 171 confirmed cases, including 20 deaths and 128 recoveries," the Ministry of Health said in a report published on social media, dated Tuesday and consulted by AFP on Wednesday.

The epidemic affects four of the country's 14 regions, particularly that of Saint-Louis (north), the most affected with 159 cases, according to data published by the ministry.

Authorities have not released figures on the number of livestock killed by the disease, the first case of which dates back to September 20, according to the Ministry of Health.

Rift Valley fever is a viral disease that mainly affects animals but can also infect humans and cause severe illness.

People with the disease experience fever, headaches, stomach aches, vomiting, and nosebleeds. In animals, the most common symptoms are fever, excessive salivation, or bleeding from the orifices.
