Sénégal : Le Pastef de Sonko boycotte le nouveau gouvernement d'Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo
Less than two weeks after Ousmane Sonko was dismissed from his post as Prime Minister, Senegal awoke on Tuesday to a new government. Unveiled Monday evening, this new cabinet, led by Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo, comprises 30 members.
This reshuffle marks a major split within the majority. Ousmane Sonko officially announced a boycott of the government by Pastef, the majority political party in the National Assembly. The former Prime Minister cited profound "disagreements" with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the composition of the cabinet. Despite this boycott order, the new executive branch still includes some members and allies of Pastef, illustrating internal tensions.
Described as a "mission" team, this new team will have to address colossal economic challenges. Senegal is going through a period of severe financial turmoil, burdened by a public debt that has reached 132% of its GDP since the end of 2024.
The top priority: The country must resume crucial negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as early as next week. The government hopes to conclude a financing agreement with the Bretton Woods institution by June 30.
This economic and political shift marks a clear change of course compared to the sovereignist line initially defended by Ousmane Sonko.
