Argentine/Patagonie : La province de Chubut en proie à des incendies dévastateurs
Since last Monday, violent forest fires have been ravaging Argentine Patagonia. The provisional toll reports more than 15,000 hectares destroyed , mobilizing hundreds of rescuers in a fierce battle against the flames.
The hardest-hit area is near the town of Epuyén , in the heart of Chubut province. In this area of primary forest, nearly 12,000 hectares have already been reduced to ashes. The fire, which started in Puerto Patriada (1,700 km south of Buenos Aires), forced the evacuation of:
Although the provincial governor, Ignacio Torres, noted a slight lull on Sunday, he described the situation as "very critical." On Saturday, gusts of wind reignited the embers, directly threatening a power plant located near Lake Epuyén.
Concern is also growing for Los Alerces National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 200,000-hectare natural gem, famous for its glacial landscapes and crystal-clear lakes, is currently affected by a significant fire whose exact extent remains to be determined.
In addition, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is monitoring two other active fires between the provinces of Chubut and Santa Cruz, which have already consumed an additional 3,800 hectares.
