A rally in support of former president Jair Bolsonaro turned tragic this Sunday in Brasilia. As thousands of supporters demonstrated in torrential rain, lightning struck near the procession, causing panic and numerous casualties.

A heavy human toll

The incident, which occurred near Cruzeiro Square, required a massive emergency response. The toll is as follows:

89 people were treated by firefighters at the scene.
47 hospitalizations , including 11 serious cases requiring intensive care.

Context of the demonstration

Organised by MP and influencer Nikolas Ferreira , this march aimed to demand amnesty for the former far-right leader.

As a reminder, the political situation remains extremely tense in Brazil:

Conviction: Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup against current President Lula.
Detention: He is incarcerated at the Papuda prison complex, on the outskirts of the capital.
Health status: At 70, the former president remains frail, marked by the after-effects of his knife attack in 2018.
