CAN 2025 : Le Bénin résiste mais cède en prolongation, l’Égypte passe en quarts
Benin's run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ended in the round of 16 after a defeat to Egypt (3-1 after extra time) . The Cheetahs nevertheless delivered a courageous performance against one of the tournament favorites.
After being tied on points for much of the match, Benin held their own against the Pharaohs throughout regulation time. Egypt opened the scoring in the second half, before Benin deservedly equalized, forcing extra time.
Physically exhausted but still fighting, the Benin players eventually succumbed to Egypt's experience and squad depth. In extra time, Egypt sealed the victory with two more goals, including one from Mohamed Salah , definitively ending the match.
Despite their elimination, Benin leaves the competition with their heads held high. Solid, disciplined, and committed, the Cheetahs displayed an attractive style of play throughout the tournament and confirmed the progress of Beninese football on the continental stage.
For its part, Egypt secured its place in the quarter-finals and continues its quest for another continental title, driven by its experience and efficiency in key moments.
