FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract until 2029, the Spanish champions announced on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

The 28-year-old Dutch international joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and is in his seventh season with the Catalan giants, with whom he has won two Spanish league titles and two Copa del Reys.

"Barça is convinced that the midfielder can play a central role in the current sporting project thanks to his quality and experience ," the club said in a statement.

De Jong has struggled at times, but he became a key part of Hansi Flick's midfield last season, alongside Pedri Gonzalez.

"I've always dreamed of playing for Barça, and now that I'm living the dream I've always had since I was a child, I want to continue chasing that dream for many more years, and I'm looking forward to winning titles ," De Jong said at a press conference.

Arriving under Josep Maria Bartomeu's presidency, De Jong is one of the club's highest-paid players. Spanish media reported that he had agreed to a pay cut in his new contract, starting in the 2026/27 season.

De Jong said previous press reports about his salary were exaggerated and had affected fans' perception of him.

"I won't tell you what I'm going to earn, it's always been talked about a lot, but I think the figures about what I used to earn have been greatly exaggerated ," he explained.

"I think it has influenced the way people perceive me a little bit, because if they read in the newspapers that Frenkie earns so much, that he is the highest paid player in Europe... it has an impact."

Barcelona attempted to sell De Jong in 2022 as part of cost-cutting measures, but the midfielder insisted on staying at the club for which he made over 250 appearances.

"I don't feel undervalued by my teammates, my coaches or within the club, it's more of a (media) problem," De Jong added.

"That's the beauty of football, everyone can have their own opinion."
