Le plan d’urgence 2026 face à une saison des pluies exceptionnelle

Faced with the prospect of particularly heavy rainfall this year, the Ivorian government is deploying a robust preparedness strategy. Between infrastructure projects and public awareness campaigns, the objective is clear: zero loss of life.

A climate threat taken seriously

The weather forecast for 2026 is worrying. With expected rainfall totals of around 1,500 mm , particularly in the Abidjan metropolitan area, the risk of major flooding is real.

During a strategic meeting at the Prime Minister's office on April 2nd, the Minister of the Interior and Security, Vagondo Diomandé , stressed the imperative of not repeating past tragedies. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, the government ordered a general mobilization of emergency and crisis management services.

The pillars of the prevention system

The state relies on a three-tiered strategy to protect vulnerable areas:

  1. Intensive dredging: A large-scale operation to clear drainage channels and gutters before the first heavy rains.
  2. Operational monitoring: Activation of the Interministerial Crisis Management Centre to coordinate relief efforts in real time.
  3. The Urban Sanitation and Resilience Project (PARU): Under the leadership of Minister Amédé Kouakou Koffi, the major construction projects are progressing rapidly in Cocody, Yopougon and Abobo , including the crucial development of the Cocody Bay channel.

A call for civic responsibility

Despite the scale of public investment, the government reiterates that the fight against flooding is a shared responsibility.

"The effectiveness of infrastructure also depends on the behavior of local residents."

The authorities urge the public to:

  1. Stop dumping garbage into drainage systems.
  2. Avoid construction in high-risk areas or pipeline rights-of-way.
  3. Adopting civic practices to curb soil erosion.

By combining cutting-edge infrastructure and community vigilance, Ivory Coast hopes to sustainably strengthen its resilience to the climatic hazards of this 2026 season.
