Plaques d’immatriculation : La DGTTC clarifie les règles de contrôle
In response to growing confusion during traffic stops, the Directorate General of Land Transport and Traffic (DGTTC) published a clarification note on Friday, April 24, 2026. This statement aims to standardize the practices of law enforcement officers and inform road users of their rights and responsibilities.
For holders of the old blue-background plates, a major rule is now established: the illegibility or absence of the barcode no longer constitutes an offence.
While the barcode is somewhat acceptable, the overall condition of the license plate is non-negotiable. To avoid a fine for "missing license plate," the characters (letters and numbers) must be:
"Maintaining the license plate is not an option, it is a responsibility linked to vehicle ownership," reminds the DGTTC.
The Ivorian authorities are taking advantage of this clarification to encourage the transition to the new white-background license plates . Although the old model is still in circulation, the white format is now the preferred standard to ensure modern traceability and strengthen national security.
In summary: Barcodes are no longer grounds for a fine, but illegible or damaged license plates remain punishable. Anticipating the switch to white license plates is strongly advised.
