Gabonese justice has come down hard on Sylvia and Noureddin Bongo. The wife and son of former president Ali Bongo were sentenced last night, Tuesday, November 11, to 20 years in prison by the Libreville Court of Appeal.

The court also issued arrest warrants for them. Their assets will be confiscated for the benefit of the Gabonese state, and they will be jointly liable for reimbursing 4.4 trillion CFA francs to the plaintiff.

Sylvia Bongo was sentenced to 20 years in prison for "receiving and embezzling public funds, money laundering, misappropriation of funds, and incitement to forgery." Noureddin was found guilty of "embezzlement of public funds, bribery, impersonation of a public official, aggravated money laundering, and criminal conspiracy."

According to this man who managed Sylvia Bongo's private funds, her personal expenses approached 2,623,828,000 CFA francs per year. She used this money to buy herself jewelry, works of art, and luxury clothing, among other things.
