Alerte Pollution : Les plages de Grand-Bassam interdites après un déversement de produits pétroliers
It's a tense end to the year for the Ivorian coast. Following a technical incident at the SIR refinery, a crude oil slick has reached the beaches of Grand-Bassam and surrounding villages. The government has taken emergency measures.
The incident in brief: It all began on Saturday, December 27, 2025, around 10 p.m. During a crude oil unloading test at the SIR (Vridi) "Buoy 2," an accidental spill occurred. Within a few hours, the pollution reached the coasts of Grand-Bassam, Azuretti, Modeste, and Mondoukou .
Radical and immediate measures: Faced with the environmental threat, the Minister of the Environment, Assahoré Konan Jacques, has ordered strict protection measures:
-Access prohibited: The beaches in question are closed to the public.
-Activities suspended: Swimming, fishing and water sports are strictly prohibited until further notice.
-Cleanup in progress: CIAPOL and SIR teams are deployed to deploy floating booms and pump out hydrocarbons.
Call for caution Although no health impact has been reported so far, the authorities are issuing a firm warning: under no circumstances should you consume any fish or seafood found on the beaches.
An investigation is currently underway to determine responsibilities and assess the actual impact on the marine ecosystem.
